Mumbai: MHADA Identifies 82 Highly Dangerous Cessed Buildings in Island City Ahead of Monsoon

The survey conducted by MHADA’s Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board covered multiple densely populated and ageing precincts, including Bomanji Lane, Bora Bazaar, Samuel Street, Sheikh Memon Road, Kalbadevi, JSS Road, VP Road, and Mama Parmanand Marg, along with several other locations across Girgaum, Khetwadi, Mazgaon, Kalachowkie, Nagpada-Byculla, and Dadar-Shivaji Park.

According to official data, a total of 2,736 people reside in these identified buildings. Of these, 2,256 are residential occupants, while 480 are non-residential occupants, reflecting a mixed-use occupancy pattern across the affected structures.

Following the identification of these high-risk buildings, MHADA issued evacuation notices to 176 residents. Subsequently, 29 individuals were relocated to transit camps, while 36 residents arranged alternative accommodation on their own. Eviction notices have been served to the remaining occupants, and the evacuation process is currently underway under the supervision of the concerned authorities.

The ongoing exercise underscores the persistent structural risks posed by ageing cessed buildings in Mumbai’s island city, particularly ahead of the monsoon season, when heavy rainfall significantly increases the threat of building collapses and endangers thousands of lives.
